Renovation On A Dime

By: Crazy Cabinet Guy

There are many simple ideas that will make your renovation project easier. Keeping your budget in mind, maintaining a practical schedule, sticking with a timeline, adding a few inexpensive features that will “spice up” the look of your project, and keeping your self organized are all great ideas, but many of these things are easier said then done.
In the current real estate market, budget is very important, house values are down in most areas, so it is important to make sure your dollar goes as far as possible. With these helpful ideas, your next house project can run a lot smoother and hopefully save you money at the same time.

Plan a budget, give some room for errors or overruns, and try to stay within your spending limit. Look for deals everywhere, including buying your supplies online. Things like RTA kitchen cabinets and light fixtures can easily be found online at considerably lower prices than you would find in a retail store. Note: RTA kitchen cabinets are “ready to assemble” cabinets, used by any budget minded rehabber. These cabinets are used because the quality of the RTA cabinets is better than most traditional cabinets and the price is about thirty five percent less!

Planning a schedule and giving your self plenty of extra time is a good idea. As unexperienced homeowners often find out the hard way on the home improvement shows, most projects are going to run past your expected schedule. These ideas always look easier on paper, so budget time in a conscious manner.

Some ideas that will give your renovation project some added flare include moldings, lighting and “room spacing” ideas. A type of popular molding is the crown molding; it is a very cost-effective way to instantly add some "wow" to your living room. The price is a few dollars per foot and with that you can give your living room a crisp and clean finish that's fresh and contemporary.

By pulling your furniture away from the walls, you can create the illusion of extra space. You'll give the room a more contemporary look and instantly make it feel larger and more open. Lighting instantly makes a room feel brighter, fresher and cleaner. By replacing an outdated, old ceiling fan with updated, energy-efficient, sunken lighting - you'll create a space that's current and habitable.

The standard for any project is paint. It is an easy and inexpensive way to make a big difference. You need a little effort and it has a smaller impact on your wallet, but a few coats of paint can take a tired living room from drab to fab. For a roomier feel, opt for lighter colors - they'll make the room feel larger.

Finally, an organized person is a more efficient person. It takes a little extra time to put your tools back in place, or clean your paint brushes when you are finished, but by doing these things, you will inevitably save your self time. Along with the bonus of saving time, you will also be saving something more important, your sanity. In any project or even in life, this might be the most important item to keep in check.
