Summers In Bayfield Ontario

By: Rob Parker

Located along the shores of Lake Huron, the village of Bayfield (Ontario) offers all of the comforts of home in the beautiful surroundings of cottage country. The village itself is set up for quiet relaxation - a place where one can rely on the pleasant rays of sunshine and temperatures averaging in the thirties in the summertime, safe in the knowledge that the breezes off the mighty lake will provide a welcome cooling in the evenings. The village offers amenities common to any similar sized town located on the shore:

The Beach: White sand beaches with easy access are common throughout the Bayfield area, and tourists and residents alike take advantage of the opportunity to bath in the crisp waters of beautiful Lake Huron and then soak up the sunshine on soft clean sand. The main beach of the community is located at the foot of Howard Street, which provides easy access to the heart of the town. Another popular beach for both sun and water bathers is located at Pioneer Park, but you will have to be able to handle a steep bank for access (there are stairs available). Less accessible beaches are located all along the shoreline, and it only takes an adventuresome spirit to gain access.

Hiking: The area surrounding Bayfield is crisscrossed with dozens of hiking trails suitable for hikers and walkers of various abilities. Easy strolls through town and along the shores of the lake are perfect for those looking for some exercise that is not too taxing, while treks through the woods and conservation preserves in the area will challenge even the most intrepid. The area is perfect for bird watching as it includes several prime marsh habitats such as Hullet Marsh.

Golf: Like any ideal resort community, there are several golf courses located throughout the area surrounding Bayfield. No fewer than six courses offering both nine and eighteen hole games can be found within a 20 minute drive of the village centre.

Theatre: Summer is theatre season in Bayfield, which offers three different festivals for fans of live play entertainment. The Stratford Festival (about an hour away) presents an international and classic variety of plays, while the Blyth Festival (half an hour distant) focuses on Canadian works. The Huron County Playhouse (15 minutes away) offers wittier and shorter entertainment that is guaranteed to please crowds of any ages.

Shopping: You can’t talk about Bayfield without mentioning its antique shops, art galleries, clothing stores, and home decorating emporiums. It also has, as every shopper needs, a great tea shop and some wonderful restaurants.

The village of Bayfield offers summer recreational opportunities that are perfectly suited to any taste. Sight seeing, golfing, relaxing on the beach or just sitting on a patio and taking in the local flavours are all great ways to pass the time in this idyllic lakeside town.

Being the sun surf and fun capital of Ontario with of miles of continuous beaches, it’s no wonder realty Grand Bend is booming.
