It is often seen as an unusual aspect of the human psyche that people are more likely to be motivated by negative statements than they are positive reinforcement. Reverse psychology is what this oddity is often called. It has proven an interesting thing to observe, with some people going out and doing things simply because someone said that they would not be able to do that. However, in the realm of health and fitness, this approach is generally unheard of. Likely, someone who has problems with their overall physical state would be seen as feeling badly enough without others adding more to the problem. As such, the use of negative reinforcement as a means of weight loss motivation has never really been tapped into. With good reason, some might say. However, that is not always the case. Weight loss motivation, like any sort of motivation, is something that has to be suited to the personality and situation of the person who needs motivating. Some people respond to positive reinforcement and encouragement, constantly being reminded that every little bit they do is one step closer to their goals. Some people are driven by competitiveness, the desire to do better than their peers. Some people are more likely to respond when prompted with something tangible as a reward, such as money or an item that has been on their “most wanted” list for some time. Finally, some people respond to taunts, jeers, and insults. People will sometimes set out to do something that seems nearly impossible for them simply because they want to prove other people wrong. Negative motivation has had a few success stories as a tool for weight loss motivation. Stories of how some men and women have taken all the negative comments about their weight as the fuel for their desire to lose weight. The approach is something that can be dangerous, however. Depending on how emotionally stable the person that is subjected to the negative comments is, and the general outlook he has on his prospects, the person may find it to be helpful initially, but it may lead to depression if prolonged. If the results of whatever weight loss regimen a person decides to use is not showing positive results, the person may eventually succumb to the taunts and jeers and become depressed. Anecdotal evidence suggests this has happened before, and will continue to happen. As a form of motivation, taunting and jeering can work on some people, but these are the people that generally take them as challenges. However, there should still be some positive reinforcement present whenever the person reaches one of their short-term weight loss goals. Some people don’t see negative comments as a challenge, and take the taunting to heart. This can be dangerous for a person’s self-esteem, and the risk of depression is nothing to laugh at. It no longer is a case of choosing between the lesser of two evils, but a matter of having to deal with two evils that are essentially fueling each other.
