The Intermountain west is comprised of the states Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Although these places are famous for their natural beauty there are many aspects of this region that people do not often tour but are certainly worthy of attention. If you have the time and inclination then make a point of visiting at least one or more of these attractions on your next trip. 1. Visit the Hot Springs- This geographic area has a great deal of thermal activity which has resulted in a many mineral hot pools in these states. Springs are as developed or as primitive as one likes. For those that prefer the primitive then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the best place for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the places that Colorado has to offer. 2. Hunt for Pictographs- The ancient Indians of the Intermountain west were very artistic, and a a lot of there 4000 year old art can persists to this day, painted on rocks across the area. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a great trail and museum, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to explore. 3. Visit the Lesser Known National Parks- If you have not visited Bryce Canyon, then certainly you should visit there first, but for people who have experienced the main circuit of parks in the west you could think about visiting the less famous ones. All together, the west has over 53 National sites, and most of the state have outstandingstate park systems as well. 4. See the Small Town Museums (as well as the large ones)- Many of the most interesting museums are those that are in the middle of nowhere, like the city museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered memorabilia from their area spanning a 100 years. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth making a special trip for as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum delves into western history for example Indians of the West or Modern Western Art. 5. Learn to Ski- The Mountains are famous for its summers, but we also have the best snow around. For those of you that are not interested in trying downhill skiing, you might try cross-country. Sun Valley, Idaho has groomed trails an addiotion top pick is the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana. 6. Explore anAlpine Lake this coming summer– The mountains of the west are full of beautiful alpine lakes. A lot of them are popular but some of the most beautiful are off the beaten track and often require a difficult journey to reach. One of our favorites is Seneca Lake in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. This secluded alpine lake is surrounded by tall cliffs and picturesque mountains that were sculpted by glaciers. The Wind River mountains are a popular destination during the summer months for fishing and backpacking opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the this same mountain range is Lonsome Lake in the Cirque of the Towers area in the southern half of the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. As you can tell, there are a many great things that you can do in the mountain west, beyond the tiredgroup tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only be exciting and fun but will provide you with many happy memories for years to come.
